Certified Building Analyst

Our owner, Kevin Veach is a BPI–certified Building Analyst, carrying out all home audits to BPI standards. (BPI is one of the two approved certifiers for the proposed federal Home Star program. Please see the BPI website for more information about their certification and programs). This means that all home energy analyses must include safety tests of all combustion appliances and treat the whole house as a system. This approach looks at all the components of a house and how they affect each other to impact safety and energy waste. It assures that improving one aspect (like air leakage) won’t make another (like combustion safety) worse. This goes far beyond what any trade specialist (e.g. insulation contractor) or simple walk-through audit can accomplish and assures that you will maximize your savings from energy improvements.

Home Analysis Steps

A home analysis starts with you. Listening to your needs and perceptions about your home and to help focus our analysis. Examining utility bills helps us identify problems and later to quantify potential savings. After the initial discussion, our analyst will perform a safety check of all combustion appliances including: gas leaks, draft, combustion efficiency, carbon monoxide testing and visual inspection.

Home Energy Analysis, Gainesville, FL A blower door test is performed to determine where and how much air leakage is contributing to your home's energy waste. This test slightly lowers the pressure inside the house and helps pinpoint hidden sources of air leakage and calculates what the combined area of those leaks would be. A preliminary test uncovers whether portions of your duct system have problems. Duct leakage can cause up to 30% of your heating and air conditioning energy to be lost, so, if necessary a special duct pressure test can be done at additional cost to determine if duct repairs are needed.

A physical inspection of the entire house is performed to check building shell problems, moisture problems, window, doors, plumbing and wiring penetrations, insulation levels, lighting efficiency, age and condition of major appliances and especially heating and air conditioning systems.

After these steps we will discuss all of our findings with you and the steps you can take on your own to reduce your energy bills. Additionally, we will prioritize the work that must be done for safety and the should be done for energy savings and comfort. A detailed written report will be provided to you later that includes all of this information as well as savings estimates for the recommended energy measures and cost estimates for work that can be completed by GEO or referred to one of our trusted contractors. Information about the availability of rebates or tax credits will be provided. If any of the recommended gas appliance repair, air sealing or major insulation is done, follow up testing will be done to assure tht the work was performed correctly.
